Contact lenses are a thin film made of plastic that fits on the front part of the eye to correct vision or for cosmetic purposes. They provide convenience and cosmesis and can be fitted to practically everyone!
Contact lenses come in two different types of material; soft or hard.
Soft lenses are made of a plastic polymer which can conform to the shape of the front part of the eye making them very comfortable. Soft lenses are available in a disposable format, where hte contact lenses are replaced are on a daily or monthly basis. Used pairs can be discarded and the low cost of soft lenses makes it both an affordable and safe option.
The hard contact lenses, also known as rigid gas permeable lenses, are made of a much more rigid polymer and can provide much better vision compared to soft contact lenses, however comfort is something that can be an initial problem when starting out. However the eye will become acustomed to the sensation of a hard lens and this will become less of a problem. Hard lenses usually last about on average 18 months each.
Hard contact lenses are becoming rarer because of the convenience of easy replacement with the soft contact lenses, as well as the comfort. However hard contact lenses do also have their benefits; speak to your theeyecarecompany optometrists to find out whether hard contact lenses will suit you.
