Macular Degeneration Screening

what is macular degeneration?

Macular Degeneration is the name given to a group of degenerative diseases of the retina, the sensory layer inside the eye that captures the light so we can see, that cause progressive, painless loss of central vision; this affects he ability to see fine detail, drive, read and recognise faces. Age Related Macular Degeneration is also now the leading cause of legal blindness.

The macula is a special area of the retina that is responsible for capturing the detail in what we want to see, such as looking at the time on our watch or reading a book. Having the macula damaged due to macula degeneration can lead to many problems and issues that cannot be fixed with glasses alone.

Although there is no cure for macula degeneration, there are treatment options that can slow down its progression, depending on the stage and type of the disease (wet, dry, and other forms). The earlier the disease is detected, the more vision you are likely to retain.
